Mean, median and mode

Enter a list of numbers and read the mean, median, mode, range, quartiles and any outliers, with the working beside them.

Separate the numbers with commas or spaces. Quartiles use the halves method, and outliers use the 1.5 IQR fences.

How to use it

  1. Enter the numbers, separated by commas or spaces.
  2. Read the mean, median, mode and range in the cards.
  3. Open the working for the halves, the quartiles and the outlier fences.

How the quartiles are chosen

The median is the middle value of the sorted list, or the average of the two middle values when the count is even. Quartiles use the halves method taught in many school courses: with an odd count the median stays out of both halves, and with an even count the two halves are the same length. Q1 is the median of the lower half and Q3 is the median of the upper half.

The interquartile range is Q3 minus Q1. A value is an outlier when it sits strictly outside the fences Q1 − 1.5 × IQR and Q3 + 1.5 × IQR. A value that lands on a fence stays in the list. When every distinct value appears equally often, the page reports that there is no single mode.

Questions

Which median does an even list use?

The average of the two middle values after sorting. For 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9 the middle pair is 4 and 5, so the median is 4.5.

What are the quartiles of that list?

The lower half is 2, 4, 4, 4 so Q1 is 4. The upper half is 5, 5, 7, 9 so Q3 is 6. The range is 7 and there is no outlier.

Can there be two modes?

Yes. Every value that appears most often is listed. When each value appears the same number of times, the result is that the list has no single mode.

Do I need to sort the numbers first?

You can paste them in any order. The working sorts a copy and leaves your typing as it is.
