How to Test Your Webcam Online: Resolution, Frame Rate and Fixes

By Alok Singh · Published

That interview, parent-teacher meeting or client call is in ten minutes, and you'd like to know now whether your camera works, how you look, and whether the lighting makes you a silhouette. Webcam test shows a live preview with the resolution and frame rate your camera is actually delivering, which isn't always what the box says.

Steps

  1. Press Start camera and allow access.
  2. If you have more than one camera, or want a different resolution, pick it.
  3. Check the readings, take a snapshot, or go full screen.

Reading the numbers

Resolution is the size of the picture the camera is sending right now. It can be lower than the camera's rating: many webcams drop resolution in poor light or over a slow USB connection.

Frame rate is measured from the frames that actually arrive. 30 fps looks smooth. Lots of webcams quietly drop to 15 fps in a dim room, which looks choppy and smeared. That's the single best clue that you need more light.

When the preview stays black

Usually one of these:

Then press Start camera again.

Looking better on video

The camera matters less than people think. Light matters most.

Mirroring

The preview is mirrored by default so it behaves like a mirror, which feels natural when adjusting your hair. Others in a call see the unmirrored image, so text on your T-shirt reads correctly for them. Switch mirroring off to see exactly what they'll see.

Phones too

Open the page on a phone and choose the front or back camera from the list. Handy for checking which phone camera gives a better image if you're joining a call from mobile.

Example: a dim home office

Your camera says 1080p, but the test shows 640×480 at 15 fps at 7 pm. Turn on a desk lamp aimed at your face and the reading jumps to 1280×720 at 30 fps. Same camera, much better picture, and it's obvious in the numbers.

Privacy

According to the page, the video stays in the page and a snapshot is only saved when you press Download. Google ads appear on the page, as on the rest of the site.

FAQ

Why isn't my webcam working in the browser? Allow access, close other camera apps, check for a shutter or camera-off key, and try again.

Why is the resolution lower than advertised? Poor light or a slow connection. Add light or try another USB port.

Can I test my phone camera? Yes, choose front or back from the list.

Why is the picture mirrored? To feel natural. Turn it off to see what others see.

Check your camera before the call, not during it: Webcam test.
