How to make an Android adaptive icon
- Open your logo as a square PNG, ideally 1024 × 1024 with a transparent background, or use Icon maker for a gradient with a glyph or letters.
- Pick a background layer colour. Android draws the background and foreground as separate layers, so a transparent logo on a solid colour gives the cleanest result.
- Keep the default 66 dp safe zone layout for logos and check the overlay: anything outside the dashed circle can be cut off by a round mask.
- Look at every launcher shape and the themed previews, then press Generate ZIP.
- Unzip and copy the
android/res/mipmap-*folders intoapp/src/main/res, replacing the oldic_launcherfiles. Uploadandroid/play-store-512.png(512 × 512) in Play Console under the store listing.
The 108 dp grid: layer, visible area and safe zone
An adaptive icon, supported since Android 8.0 (API 26), is two 108 × 108 dp layers. The launcher shows only the middle 72 × 72 dp through its mask and can move or scale the layers for motion effects, which is why the extra 18 dp on each side exists. Android's guidance is to keep the logo inside the central 66 dp circle, the safe zone, because that is the part every mask shape keeps.
The overlay shades what falls outside the 72 dp visible area and draws the 66 dp safe circle and the 72 dp square, so you can see straight away if a wordmark or a corner of the logo would be cropped. Fill layouts suit textures and patterns that are meant to run past the edge.
Launcher shapes and themed icons
- Device makers and launchers pick the mask: a circle on Pixel phones, while other launchers use squircles, rounded squares or a teardrop, and some let users choose. The previews use the mask paths from the Android Open Source Project's icon-shape options.
- Themed icons (Android 13 and later) use only the monochrome layer: the launcher fills its shape with a colour from the wallpaper and tints the monochrome artwork. The previews show it on a light and a dark wallpaper palette.
- Without a monochrome layer the launcher can't theme the icon from your own artwork: it either leaves it in full colour, which stands out among themed icons, or, on some newer versions, tints a version it makes itself.
- Round icons (
ic_launcher_round) and the legacy squareic_launcherPNGs are still included for launchers and Android versions older than 8.0.

Questions
What size is an Android adaptive icon?
Each layer is 108 × 108 dp, which is 432 × 432 px at xxxhdpi. Only the middle 72 dp is visible, and the logo should fit in the central 66 dp circle. The Play Store icon is a separate 512 × 512 px PNG.
How do I add a monochrome themed icon?
Add a monochrome layer to the adaptive-icon XML next to the foreground and background. This generator writes a monochrome PNG for every density and references it in mipmap-anydpi-v26, so themed icons work on Android 13 and later.
Why is my launcher icon cut off or too small?
The launcher only shows the middle 72 dp of the 108 dp layer and then applies its mask, so artwork drawn edge to edge gets cropped. Keep the logo inside the 66 dp safe zone; if it looks small, use a bolder mark rather than pushing it to the edge.
Do I still need ic_launcher_round?
Devices on Android 8.0 and later use the adaptive XML. Round PNGs and the legacy square icons are only for older versions and some launchers, and the ZIP includes both so you can keep android:roundIcon in the manifest.
Is this the same as the app icon generator?
It uses the same drawing engine with Android switched on and the other platforms off, and adds a safe-zone overlay, more launcher shapes and themed previews. Use the app icon generator when you need iOS and web icons too.
