How to use it

  1. Pick white, pink, brown or blue noise.
  2. Set the volume and, if you like, a sleep timer.
  3. Press Play. The noise runs until you press Stop or the timer ends.

Which noise colour to pick

White noise has equal energy at every frequency and sounds like a bright hiss, good for masking voices. Pink noise lowers the highs by 3 dB per octave and sounds like steady rain, which many people find easier to sleep with. Brown noise lowers them further and sounds like a deep rumble or a waterfall. Blue noise is the opposite of pink, with extra highs.

The sound is generated continuously in the page, so it loops seamlessly. The fade-out lowers the volume over the last minute of the timer so the stop does not wake you. Keep this tab open, and on a phone keep the screen on or the browser in front, because some phones pause audio in background tabs.

Questions

Which noise is best for sleep?

Many people prefer pink or brown noise for sleep because the softer highs feel less harsh than white noise. Try each for a minute at a low volume and keep the one you like.

Does the noise loop with a gap?

The noise is generated continuously, so it plays smoothly with no repeating pattern or pause.

Will it keep playing with the screen off?

On a computer, yes, while the tab stays open. Phones may pause web audio in the background, so keep the browser open in front if the sound stops.

How loud should white noise be?

Keep it at a comfortable, low level, roughly as loud as a quiet shower. For babies, place the speaker well away from the cot and keep the volume low.
