How to Make Rent Receipts for HRA (India), Free
Every January or February, HR sends the reminder: submit rent receipts for your HRA exemption or more tax gets deducted from your last few salaries. Then begins the hunt for a landlord who'll sign twelve receipts. Rent receipt produces a full year of numbered receipts in one PDF so the landlord signs once per page and you're done.
Steps
- Enter who paid the rent and who received it, and the property address.
- Pick one period, or Every month in a range for one receipt per month, for example April 2026 to March 2027.
- Add a signature if you like (drawn or uploaded).
- Press Download PDF or Print.
What each receipt contains
- Its own receipt number, counting up from the one you type.
- Date, payer, property and the month.
- Rent in figures and in words (Indian wording uses lakh and crore).
- Landlord's PAN, only if you type one.
- A signature above the "Received by" line, if you added one.
A financial year range gives you 12 receipts, one per page, each with its month, number and rent.
The revenue stamp rule
When rent is paid in cash and is over ₹5,000, a revenue stamp is usually needed on the receipt, with the landlord signing across it. The page reminds you and leaves a stamp box only in that case. Rent paid by bank transfer or UPI doesn't trigger the reminder, and a bank record of payments is good supporting evidence anyway.
Landlord's PAN
The PAN line is optional and left off if blank. Many employers ask for the landlord's PAN when yearly rent is over ₹1 lakh, so check your company's policy. If the landlord doesn't have a PAN, employers typically want a declaration from them instead. HR will tell you the format.
HRA basics (and the regime question)
HRA exemption is only available in the old tax regime. If you've chosen the new regime, rent receipts won't reduce your tax, though some employers still collect them. Compare both regimes with Income tax (India) before deciding.
Tips so HR doesn't bounce them
- Match the address to your rental agreement exactly.
- Use consistent amounts. If rent changed mid-year, make two ranges with different amounts.
- Keep the agreement and bank statements in case of questions.
- Get the landlord to sign each page, even if you add a digital signature, unless your employer accepts digital ones.
- Rent paid to parents is allowed if they own the property and declare the income, but keep proof of payment.
Example
Monthly rent ₹22,000 paid by UPI, April 2026 to March 2027. Enter details, landlord PAN (annual rent ₹2.64 lakh exceeds ₹1 lakh), pick the range, download. Twelve pages, numbered 1 to 12, each saying "Rupees Twenty Two Thousand Only". Landlord signs, you scan, submit.
Rules as of October 2026
Rules as of 27 October 2026. The page makes a receipt with the details listed on it, including an optional landlord PAN and amount in words. HRA exemption rules, including when a landlord's PAN is required, are set by the Income Tax Department and your employer's policy, and they can change. Check both before you submit.
