How the tax is worked out
From 1 April 2026 the Income-tax Act, 2025 calls this period tax year 2026-27, with the same slabs as the year before. In the new regime, the default, income up to 4 lakh is tax-free, then 5% to 4-8 lakh, 10% to 8-12 lakh, 15% to 12-16 lakh, 20% to 16-20 lakh, 25% to 20-24 lakh and 30% above. Salaried people deduct a standard 75,000, and a rebate makes tax nil up to 12 lakh of taxable income, with marginal relief just above it. Most deductions are left out in this regime.
The old regime keeps deductions such as 80C, 80D, home-loan interest, HRA and NPS, with a 50,000 standard deduction and higher tax-free limits for senior citizens. Surcharge applies above 50 lakh with marginal relief, and 4% health and education cess is added to the total. The result is an estimate for planning; your Form 16 and return are the final word.

Questions
Which regime is better for me?
The page works out both. The new regime usually wins unless your deductions such as 80C, home-loan interest and HRA add up to a large amount.
Is income up to 12 lakh tax-free in the new regime?
Yes, taxable income up to 12 lakh pays no tax because of the rebate. For salaried people, the 75,000 standard deduction makes that 12.75 lakh of salary.
Is HRA allowed in the new regime?
HRA exemption and most deductions apply only in the old regime. Employer NPS contributions are allowed in both.
Does the calculator include cess and surcharge?
Yes. 4% health and education cess is added, and surcharge with marginal relief applies to incomes above 50 lakh.
