How to Merge PDF Files Into One, in the Order You Want
Visa applications, insurance claims and job portals love asking for "one PDF". You, meanwhile, have a passport scan, two bank statements, a cover letter and a salary certificate, all separate files. Merge PDF stitches them together in your browser so you can upload a single document and move on.
How it goes
- Open the tool and pick two or more PDFs. You can select them all at once.
- Forgot one? Use the file button again. The new file lands at the bottom of the list.
- Sort the list with the up and down arrows. The merged file follows the list top to bottom, so put the cover letter first.
- Remove anything that crept in by mistake.
- Press Merge PDFs and save the result.
Each file is checked as it's added. If something isn't really a PDF, or it's locked with an open password, the list marks it and says why, so you can pull it out instead of watching the whole merge fail.
A worked example
Say a consulate asks for: application form, passport bio page, last three months of statements, and an employment letter, in that order. The statements arrive as three separate downloads from net banking, one of them password-protected (Indian banks often lock statements with a DOB-based password).
- Unlock the protected statement first with Unlock PDF, using the password you already know.
- Photograph or scan the passport page and convert it with JPG to PDF, since this page accepts PDFs only.
- Add all six files, arrange them, merge.
- If the portal has a size cap, run the result through Compress PDF.
What survives the merge
Pages are copied into a brand-new PDF. That has a few side effects worth knowing before you hit the button:
- Bookmarks and comments don't come along. If a long report relied on its bookmark panel, the merged copy won't have one.
- Passwords are not carried over. Locked files have to be unlocked beforehand; the merged file itself has no password unless you add one later with Protect PDF.
- Form fields usually survive. Fields the underlying library (pdf-lib) can copy are kept. One that can't be copied is dropped rather than stopping the job, so double-check fillable forms afterwards.
- Order is per file, not per page. To shuffle individual pages, merge first and then rearrange in Organize PDF.
Practical tips
- Rename files with a number prefix (01-form.pdf, 02-passport.pdf) before picking them. The list then starts close to the right order.
- Very large batches lean on your browser's memory. On an older phone, merging forty scanned files at once may struggle; doing it in two rounds is easier.
- Open the merged file and scroll through it once. A blank or rotated page is much easier to fix now than after a rejection email.
- Keep the source files. If the recipient later wants just one part, you won't need to split anything.
Privacy
The tool page says the PDFs stay in the tab and aren't uploaded, which matters when the bundle is basically your identity plus your finances. Google ads appear on the page, as on the rest of the site.
FAQ
Can I change the order after picking files? Yes, with the arrows next to each file. Nothing is final until you press Merge.
Can I include a photo? Not directly. Convert images with JPG to PDF, then add that PDF here.
Is there a file count limit? No fixed number is stated; the practical limit is your device's memory.
What if one file refuses to merge? It'll be flagged with a reason in the list. Remove it, fix it (often by unlocking), and add it back.
Got a pile of documents and a portal that wants one file? Merge PDF will handle it.
