Talking while you code

Pick the fix

You realise halfway through that your approach misses a case. What is the best move?

Options

Choose an answer, then open Show answer below to check it.

Show answer

Answer: A Say what you found, show the failing example, and explain the fix before changing code

Right: it shows testing and judgement, and lets the interviewer follow.

Catching your own bug out loud usually scores better than code that was right first time but never explained.

Why not the others?
  • B Quietly rewrite the function. The interviewer cannot see your reasoning.
  • C Carry on and hope it is not noticed. Interviewers usually test exactly those cases.

30-second answer

Narrate decisions, not keystrokes: say what the next block does and why ('this loop grows the window until the total passes the budget'). Pause to state invariants and edge cases as you handle them. If you go quiet to think, say so. Interviewers score communication separately, and they can only give hints if they know where you are.

Practise saying it · 30 s. No recording, just a timer

Explain how you communicate while coding.

Say your answer out loud, then check which of these points you covered:

  • Narrate decisions
  • State invariants
  • Say when you pause

Deep dive

Name variables for what they hold; it reduces how much you need to explain.

Write a short plan as comments first, then fill it in.

When you change your mind, say why; it shows judgement.

Common mistakes

  • Silent coding for ten minutes.
  • Reading code aloud character by character.

Senior take & follow-ups

Practise narrating with a timer; it is a skill, not a talent.

Follow-up questions

Think of your answer first, then open the hint.

  1. What if you need quiet to think?

    Show hint

Say 'give me a minute to think about the edge case', then think.

  2. How do you take a hint well?

    Show hint

Repeat it in your own words, then say how it changes your plan.

Suggest a fix if something here is wrong or out of date.
