  • Write the brute force
  • Solve a tiny example by hand
  • Ask a focused question about one assumption

Answer: A C B D

  1. Say that you are stuck and what you have tried It keeps the interviewer involved.
  2. Solve a tiny example by hand Your own steps often reveal the algorithm.
  3. Write the brute force Something correct is better than nothing.
  4. Ask a focused question about one assumption It earns a precise hint.

30-second answer

Say you are stuck and what you have tried. Go back to a small example and solve it by hand, noting what you did. Try each likely pattern against the cues. Write the brute force so there is something correct, then look for repeated work. Ask a focused question ('would sorting the input be allowed?'). A clear, honest process scores far better than silence.

Practise saying it · 30 s. No recording, just a timer

Explain what you do when stuck.

Say your answer out loud, then check which of these points you covered:

  • Say it
  • Small example by hand
  • Brute force, then a focused question

Deep dive

Solving a tiny example by hand often reveals the algorithm.

Change one assumption: what if the input were sorted, small or had no duplicates?

A focused question gets a useful hint; 'any hints?' gets a vague one.

Common mistakes

  • Going silent.
  • Abandoning a nearly correct idea without saying why.

Senior take & follow-ups

Practise saying 'here's what I know so far' out loud; it unlocks most stuck moments.

Follow-up questions

Think of your answer first, then open the hint.

  1. Is taking a hint bad?

    Show hint

No; using a hint well is part of the score. Ignoring it is what hurts.

  2. What if time is nearly up?

    Show hint

Explain the approach you would take, its cost, and code the part you can finish.
