How to use it

  1. Type your city, or use your location.
  2. Pick the date. Today is filled in.
  3. Read the tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana with their end times, and the timings below.

How the panchang is calculated

The tithi depends on the angle between the Moon and the Sun: every 12° is one tithi, from Pratipada to Purnima in the bright half and on to Amavasya in the dark half. The nakshatra is the Moon's position among the 27 star divisions of 13°20', the yoga comes from the sum of the Sun's and Moon's positions, and the karana is half a tithi. Positions are sidereal, using the Lahiri ayanamsa.

The values shown are those in force at local sunrise, as in a printed panchang, with the time each one ends. The month is given in the amanta system, with the purnimanta name in the dark half. Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, Gulika and Abhijit Muhurat use the day length from sunrise to sunset.

Questions

Why does my printed panchang show slightly different end times?

Panchangs differ by city, by ayanamsa and by the astronomy they use. This page uses precise Sun and Moon positions with the Lahiri ayanamsa for your city, so results within a few minutes of other Lahiri panchangs are normal.

Which month system does the page use?

It shows the amanta month, which starts after the new moon and is used in western and southern India, and adds the purnimanta name used in the north during the dark half.

What does the tithi at sunrise mean?

Hindu days run from sunrise to sunrise, so the tithi in force at sunrise names the day, even if it ends later that morning.

Is this astrological advice?

The page gives times and calendar values only. For muhurat choices, consult your family priest or astrologer.
