How Rahu Kaal is calculated
Rahu Kaal is not a fixed clock time. The daytime from local sunrise to sunset is divided into eight equal parts, and Rahu Kaal is one of them, chosen by the weekday: the 8th part on Sunday, 2nd on Monday, 7th on Tuesday, 5th on Wednesday, 6th on Thursday, 4th on Friday and 3rd on Saturday. Because day length changes with the season and the city, the window moves by several minutes from day to day and place to place. This page works it out from the actual sunrise and sunset of the place you pick.
The other daily periods
- Yamaganda (Yamagandam) is another eighth of the day traditionally avoided for new beginnings.
- Gulika Kaal (Kuligai) is considered mixed: avoided for starting auspicious work, though some traditions see actions done in it as repeating.
- Abhijit Muhurat is the eighth of the fifteen daytime muhurtas, centred near local noon, and is regarded as favourable, except traditionally on Wednesday.
- Many people avoid starting journeys, signing agreements, buying a vehicle or beginning new ventures during Rahu Kaal. Daily prayers and ongoing work continue as usual.
Accuracy and local practice
- Sunrise here is when the top of the sun appears on a flat horizon, the convention used by most printed panchangs. Hills, altitude and refraction can shift it by a minute or two.
- Some almanacs use different sunrise conventions, so a published calendar may differ by a few minutes. Follow your family priest or local panchang when it matters.
- For cities outside the list, choose Other place and enter latitude, longitude and the time zone name (for example America/Chicago).
Questions
What is the Rahu Kaal time today?
Pick your city above; the table shows today's Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, Gulika and Abhijit Muhurat from local sunrise and sunset, and marks the period you are in now.
Why is Rahu Kaal different in each city?
It is one eighth of the time between sunrise and sunset, and those times depend on where you are and the season.
What should not be done in Rahu Kaal?
Tradition advises against starting new ventures, journeys, purchases or ceremonies during Rahu Kaal. Ongoing work and daily worship are not affected.
Is Rahu Kaal the same as Yamaganda?
No. Both are eighths of the day considered inauspicious, but they fall at different times on each weekday.
Does this work for the USA, UK and other countries?
Yes. The calculation uses the sunrise and sunset of the chosen place, so it is valid anywhere outside the polar regions.
