How Choghadiya works

The day from sunrise to sunset is divided into eight equal Choghadiyas, and the night from sunset to the next sunrise into eight more. Each one is ruled by one of seven types, which repeat in a fixed order. The first day Choghadiya is set by the weekday's ruling planet: Udveg on Sunday, Amrit on Monday, Rog on Tuesday, Labh on Wednesday, Shubh on Thursday, Chal on Friday and Kaal on Saturday. Because the length of each part follows the real sunrise and sunset, a Choghadiya is rarely exactly 90 minutes.

Questions

What is today's Choghadiya?

Choose your city above to see all sixteen day and night Choghadiyas for today, with the current one highlighted.

Which Choghadiya is best?

Amrit, Shubh and Labh are considered the best. Chal is neutral, and Udveg, Rog and Kaal are avoided for new work.

How long is one Choghadiya?

One eighth of the daytime or night-time. It is about 90 minutes near the equinoxes but longer or shorter in summer and winter.

Is Choghadiya the same everywhere?

No. It depends on local sunrise and sunset, so it changes with the city and the date.

Can I use this outside India?
