What gets drawn
The number is new text on the page, in a plain font. A number that was already printed in the artwork stays where it was. This page does not detect or cover an old number. The count follows the pages in the file, starting at the number you type.
Bottom center is the default. Bottom right and top right sit in from the corner. A page that is rotated still gets the number in that page’s own coordinate box.

Questions
Can I skip the cover?
Set the first number, then accept that the cover gets a number too. To leave the cover clean, split it off, number the rest, and merge them again.
Can the number say Page 1 of 8?
No. The drawing is the number only.
Does the number match a printed footer?
Only if that footer was empty. An existing footer is not removed.
