How to Convert a PDF to an Editable Word Document Without Uploading It

By Alok Singh · Published

Someone sends you a two-page contract as a PDF and asks for "a couple of small edits". You don't have the original Word file, retyping it is miserable, and the PDF editor you'd need costs money. PDF to Word gets you a .docx you can open in Word, Google Docs, Pages or LibreOffice, and it does it without sending the file anywhere.

Why PDF-to-Word is harder than it sounds

A PDF doesn't really know what a paragraph is. It stores characters and the coordinates where each one is drawn. Any converter has to guess the structure back. This one reads the positions with pdf.js and then applies some sensible rules:

What doesn't come through perfectly: multi-column layouts, tables, text boxes and precise spacing are approximations. Simple letters, reports and CVs convert best; a magazine layout won't.

How to convert

  1. Open the tool and pick the PDF. Set a page range if you only need part of it.
  2. Leave Include pictures ticked unless you want text only.
  3. Press Convert to Word.
  4. Open the .docx side by side with the PDF and scan for anything that shifted.

Example: editing a contract clause

For the contract above, the conversion gives you headings as real Word headings and numbered clauses as a numbered list, which is exactly what you want when the other party asks for clause 7 to be reworded. Make the edit, turn on Track Changes if they want to see it, and export back with Word to PDF when you're done.

Common problems and fixes

The document came out empty. The PDF is almost certainly a scan, which contains pictures of text, not text. Run it through OCR PDF first and convert the OCR'd copy.

Bold went missing in places. Bold that the PDF draws using a bold font is detected. Bold faked by drawing a regular font with thicker strokes can't be.

A table turned into loose lines. Tables are one of the weak spots. If the table is the point (a bank statement, a price list), PDF to Excel is the better tool.

Two columns got interleaved. Column detection is approximate. Fix it by cutting and pasting the second column below the first; it's usually quicker than it looks.

Headers and footers repeat in the body. They're among the things that only come through approximately. Delete them and re-add them in Word's header area.

Tips

Privacy

The page states the PDF is not uploaded and the .docx is assembled on your device; pdf.js does the reading in the tab. For contracts and HR letters that's a real advantage over upload-based converters. Google ads appear on the page, as on the rest of the site.

FAQ

Will it look exactly like the PDF? Often close, not always identical. Text, headings, lists and images come across; columns, tables and spacing are approximate.

Does it work with Google Docs? Yes, through Drive.

Why is my scanned PDF blank in Word? Because there's no text in it to extract. OCR it first.

Is anything sent to a server? No, the conversion runs in your browser tab.
