PDF to Word converter

Choose a PDF. The page reads the text the PDF stores, rebuilds headings from larger text, joins lines into paragraphs, keeps bullet and numbered lists, bold and italic, and places the pictures in order. The download is a .docx for Word, Google Docs, Pages or LibreOffice.

Limits: headings, paragraphs, lists, bold, italic and pictures are rebuilt. Columns, tables, text boxes and exact fonts come out approximate, as plain paragraphs. A scanned PDF has no text to convert: run OCR PDF on it first.

How to use it

  1. Choose the PDF, and a page range if you only need part of it.
  2. Leave Include pictures ticked to keep the images.
  3. Press Convert to Word and open the .docx. Check the layout against the PDF.

What comes through, and what does not

A PDF stores letters at positions on a page, not paragraphs or headings. This page reads those positions with pdf.js and rebuilds the structure: larger lines become Heading 1, 2 or 3, lines that follow each other become one paragraph, lines starting with a bullet or a number become a list, and the font names tell it which words are bold or italic. Pictures are copied as they appear on the page, in reading order.

Columns, tables, text boxes, headers and footers, and exact fonts and spacing are approximate: they come out as plain paragraphs in reading order. A scanned PDF stores pictures of pages rather than letters, so run OCR PDF on it first. For a pixel-perfect copy of a complex layout you need a desktop converter.

Questions

Will the Word file look exactly like the PDF?

Not always. Text, headings, lists and pictures come through; columns, tables and exact spacing are approximate. Simple reports and letters convert best.

Does it open in Google Docs?

Yes. Upload the .docx to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs, or open it in Word, Pages or LibreOffice.

Why is my document empty?

The PDF is probably a scan, which stores pictures rather than letters. Run OCR PDF on it first, then convert that copy.

Are bold and italic kept?

Yes, when the PDF uses bold or italic fonts. Bold drawn as thicker strokes in a regular font cannot be detected.

Is the file uploaded to a server?

No. pdf.js reads the PDF and the .docx is written in this tab.
