How to Convert a Word Document to PDF in Your Browser
The job portal says "PDF only", your CV is a .docx, and you're on a borrowed laptop without Word. Or you're on a phone and the "Export as PDF" option in your docs app keeps mangling the margins. Word to PDF reads the Word file in the browser and writes a PDF you can download straight away.
What comes across
- Text formatting: bold, italic, underline, font size and colour.
- Structure: lists, tables, headers and footers.
- Pictures: PNG and JPEG images.
- Links stay clickable.
- Page setup: page size and margins follow the document, so A4 stays A4 and US Letter stays US Letter.
The resulting PDF contains real text, so it can be selected, searched and copied, which matters for applicant tracking systems that read your CV.
What doesn't
Charts, equations, and images stored in EMF or WMF format don't make it into the PDF. The page tells you when something was left out, so you're not surprised later. And it only reads .docx; an old .doc file has to be re-saved as .docx first (File → Save As in Word or LibreOffice).
Steps
- Open the tool and add the .docx.
- Let it read the paragraphs, lists, tables and pictures.
- Download the PDF and open it.
A realistic check before you hit submit
Say it's your CV. Open the PDF and look at four things:
- Page breaks. Does a section heading sit alone at the bottom of page 1? Insert a page break in the .docx and convert again.
- Fonts. Unusual fonts may be substituted. If the look matters, stick to common fonts in the document.
- Pictures. If your headshot or logo is missing, check its format. Saving it as PNG or JPEG inside the document fixes it.
- Links. Click your LinkedIn or portfolio link in the PDF to be sure it's live.
Situations where this helps
- Assignments. Many college portals accept only PDF and reject .docx outright.
- Invoices or quotes written in Word. Clients expect a PDF they can't accidentally edit.
- Letters for official use. A PDF keeps the layout stable no matter what device opens it.
- Signing. Convert, then add a signature with Sign PDF.
Tips
- If the document has a chart, paste it into Word as a PNG picture before converting; then it'll be included.
- For equations, the same trick works: a screenshot inserted as an image.
- Need to go the other way? PDF to Word rebuilds a .docx from a PDF.
- If the result is too heavy for an upload limit, run it through Compress PDF using the mode that keeps text and links.
Why convert at all
A .docx looks different depending on who opens it. Word on Windows, Pages on a Mac and Google Docs each lay out fonts, spacing and page breaks slightly differently, so a CV that fits neatly on one page for you can spill onto a second page for the recruiter. A PDF fixes the layout in place. It also stops casual edits: a client can't accidentally type over a figure in a quote. That stability is the whole point, which is why it's worth thirty seconds to open the PDF and check it before you send it.
Privacy
According to the tool page, the conversion runs in the page and both the .docx and the PDF stay on your device. That's a good fit for CVs, offer letters and anything with personal details. Like other pages on the site, it shows Google ads.
FAQ
Does it open .doc files? No, only .docx. Re-save older files as .docx first.
Will A4 stay A4? Yes, page size and margins follow the document.
Can the PDF's text be selected? Yes, it's ordinary text, not a picture.
Why is my chart missing? Charts aren't drawn. Insert it as a PNG or JPEG image instead.
Portal wants a PDF? Word to PDF takes about as long as opening the file.
