What the charts follow
Women’s dresses and tops share one numeric chart: US 8 is UK 12, EU 40, Italy 46, France 40, Japan 13 and China 165/92. Letter sizes follow the US scale, so M is US 8. Men’s shirt collars are the neck in inches for US and UK, and the neck in centimetres for EU, Japan and China. A 15.5 inch collar is 39 cm.
Men’s jackets use the chest in inches for US and UK, and EU and Japan are that chest plus 10. China is written as height/chest, so US 40 is 180/100. Trouser waists in EU are the inch size plus 16, and Japan and China show the waist in centimetres. Children’s EU sizes follow height, and Japan and China step by about 10 cm. Brands differ by about a size, so the measurement line is there for a tape check.

Questions
What is US 8 in UK and EU?
On the women’s dress chart, US 8 is UK 12 and EU 40, and also Japan 13 and China 165/92.
How do Japanese and Chinese sizes differ?
Japan’s women’s numbers run 3, 5, 7, 9 and upward. China’s women’s sizes are height and bust, such as 165/92. For men, both often use centimetres: a collar, a chest or a waist.
What about Italian and French dress sizes?
They are on the women’s dress and top chart. France matches the EU number. Italy is the EU number plus 6, so EU 40 is Italy 46.
How do I convert a child’s size?
Choose Children and enter an age, a size such as 8 or 2T, or a height such as 128 cm. EU is the height in centimetres on this chart.
Why might a shop’s label disagree?
Brands grade patterns differently. The measurement row is a common bust, waist, hip, chest or neck for that chart size, and a tape is the check when a brand runs large or small.
