How to use it

  1. Type your city, or use your location, for rise and set times.
  2. Pick a date if you want another night.
  3. Read the phase, the illumination and the coming phase dates, and browse the month calendar.

How the phase is worked out

The phase comes from the angle between the Moon and the Sun as seen from Earth: 0° is new moon, 90° first quarter, 180° full moon and 270° last quarter. The percentage is the part of the Moon's disc that is lit. Positions come from a precise astronomy library, so the times of each phase are accurate to about a minute.

Rise and set times are for the city you choose, in its time zone. From the southern hemisphere the Moon appears upside down compared with the north, so the lit side is on the other side; tick the southern view to match what you see.

Questions

When is the next full moon?

The coming phases list shows the date and time of the next full moon in your time zone.

What does the illumination percentage mean?

It is the share of the Moon's visible disc lit by the Sun. A full moon is close to 100% and a new moon close to 0%.

Why does the moon look different in Australia?

From the southern hemisphere you see the Moon the other way up, so a waxing crescent is lit on the left instead of the right.

What is the moon's age?

The number of days since the last new moon. A full lunar cycle takes about 29.5 days.
