How to use it

  1. Enter the surface length and width, in metres or feet.
  2. Pick a tile size, the grout gap and the waste percent.
  3. Read the tile count, the boxes and the cost if you added a price.

Area, grout and waste

Net area is length times width, minus openings. A door is taken as 0.9 × 2.1 m (3 × 7 ft) and a window as 1.2 × 1.2 m (4 × 4 ft), and you can add any other opening. Each tile is counted with the grout gap added to both sides, so the pitch is slightly larger than the tile.

Straight laying often allows about 10% waste, and a diagonal lay about 15%. The buttons set those figures. Boxes are the tile count divided by the tiles in a box, rounded up. Leave the price blank to skip the cost.

Questions

How much waste should I add?

10% is a common allowance for a straight lay, and 15% for a diagonal lay. Cuts around doors and a patterned tile can need more, so raise the percent if the room is awkward.

Does the grout gap change the count?

Yes. The page adds the gap to the tile width and height before dividing the area, so a wider joint means slightly fewer tiles.

How do doors and windows come off?

Each door removes 0.9 × 2.1 m and each window removes 1.2 × 1.2 m in metric mode. For a floor, leave the door count at zero, because a door is an opening in a wall.

Can I use tiles sized in inches?

Yes. The list includes 12 × 12, 18 × 18 and 4 × 4 inches, and Custom takes millimetres.

What if the box count looks high?

Boxes round up, so the last box may be partly spare. That spare is useful for later chips. Lower the tiles-per-box figure if your box holds a different number.
