Points, pixels and scale
- Points are what layouts use: UIKit and SwiftUI work in points, and Safari's CSS pixels equal points. An iPhone 16 is 393 points wide, so a full-width web page there is 393 CSS px.
- Scale is how many physical pixels make one point in each direction: @3x on current iPhones, @2x on the iPhone 11, XR and SE.
- Pixels are the native panel resolution: points × scale. Export images and App Store screenshots at this size.
- The iPhone 12 mini and 13 mini render at 1125 × 2436 and are downsampled to their 1080 × 2340 panels; 8 Plus models do the same from 1242 × 2208.
Design and testing tips
- Design at 393 × 852 points (iPhone 14 Pro to 16) or 402 × 874 (iPhone 16 Pro, 17, 17 Pro) and check the smallest current width, 375 points on the iPhone SE.
- Respect safe areas: on Face ID models the top inset (notch or Dynamic Island) is roughly 47 to 62 points and the home indicator takes 34 points in portrait. In CSS use
env(safe-area-inset-top)withviewport-fit=cover. - Phones with identical points and scale (for example iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 18 Pro) look the same to a browser; user agents no longer reveal the exact model.
- For app icon files, use the app icon generator.
Where these numbers come from
Pixel resolutions, pixel densities and diagonals are from Apple's technical specifications for each model; point sizes are the resolution divided by the scale factor, as listed in Apple's Human Interface Guidelines. Diagonals are rounded to the figure Apple publishes.
Questions
What is the iPhone 16 screen size in pixels?
1179 × 2556 pixels at 460 ppi, which is 393 × 852 points at @3x. The iPhone 16 Plus is 1290 × 2796 pixels (430 × 932 points).
What is the viewport width of an iPhone in CSS?
It equals the width in points: 375 to 440 CSS px on current models, depending on the model. 390, 393 and 402 are the most common today.
What resolution should an iPhone wallpaper be?
Use the pixel size of the model, for example 1206 × 2622 for iPhone 17 or 17 Pro and 1320 × 2868 for the Pro Max. The wallpaper resizer can crop to these sizes.
Why does my phone match two models?
A web page can only see points and scale. Models with the same screen, such as iPhone 15 and 16 or 17 and 17 Pro, cannot be told apart that way.
Which iPhones use @2x?
Recent @2x iPhones are the iPhone 11, XR and SE (2nd and 3rd generation). All other current models are @3x.
