Click the test area and press each key. Keys turn blue while held and stay green once tested, so a dead or sticky key stands out at once.

How to use it

  1. Pick your layout and keyboard size.
  2. Click the test area, then press every key once.
  3. Look for keys that stay grey, then hold several keys together to test rollover.

What the test shows

Each key you press lights up on the layout, and the panel shows the key name, its code and how many keys have registered. Held keys show in blue, so you can press several at once to see how many your keyboard reports together. Gaming keyboards often support six or more; many laptop keyboards drop some combinations, which is called ghosting.

The browser receives the code of the physical key, so the test works with any language layout. A key that never lights up is either faulty or handled by the system before the browser sees it, as Fn, some media keys and screen shortcuts usually are. The page keeps arrow keys, the space bar and Tab inside the test area while it has focus.

Questions

How do I find a broken key?

Press every key once. Any key that stays grey after you press it did not reach the browser and is likely faulty, or has a stuck switch.

What is keyboard ghosting?

Ghosting is when pressing several keys at once makes some of them go missing or produces a wrong key. Hold down combinations you use in games and watch the held-keys count.

Why does the Fn key not light up?

Fn is read by the keyboard itself and changes what other keys send, so browsers never receive it. Some media and system keys behave the same way.

Does it work on a Mac?

Yes. Choose the Mac layout to see Command and Option labels. Every key works the same way.
