How words per minute is measured

Speed counts five characters, including spaces, as one word, the standard used by typing tests. Net WPM counts only correct characters, so mistakes lower your score; gross WPM counts everything you typed. Accuracy is the share of characters you typed correctly.

The passages come from classic books in the public domain, such as Pride and Prejudice and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, so you practise real sentences with punctuation. Your best score for each length is saved in this browser.

Questions

What is a good typing speed?

Around 40 words per minute is average for adults. 60 to 70 is good for office work, and 80 or more is fast.

Do mistakes lower my score?

Yes. Net WPM counts only correct characters, so accuracy matters as much as speed.

Can I use backspace?

Yes. Fixing a mistake counts toward accuracy, and the corrected text counts toward your speed.

Where do the passages come from?

From classic novels in the public domain, so you can practise on real writing.
