How to use it

  1. Enter a yearly deposit or a deposit every month, in multiples of ₹50.
  2. Choose whether it is paid on or before the 5th, and how many years to project.
  3. Read the maturity balance, the interest credited each year, and the year-by-year table.

How PPF interest is credited

Paragraph 7 credits interest at the end of each financial year on the lowest balance between the close of the 5th and the end of the month. A deposit on or before the 5th earns interest for that month. A deposit after the 5th earns interest from the following month. Interest joins the balance at the year-end credit, and each year's interest is rounded to the nearest rupee.

The account matures 15 years after the end of the financial year of opening, and it can be extended in blocks of five years. The government sets the rate each quarter. SB Order No. 12/2026 kept the public provident fund at 7.1% for October to December 2026, the same rate as the quarter before. This projection holds the rate you enter. Premature closure, on the grounds in paragraph 13 and after five years from the end of the opening year, uses a rate one point lower than the rate credited.

Questions

What are the deposit limits?

Paragraph 4 sets a minimum of ₹500 and a maximum of ₹1,50,000 in a year, in multiples of ₹50. The maximum includes deposits a guardian makes in a minor's account.

Why does the month of the deposit matter?

A deposit in April on or before the 5th earns a full year. A deposit in March after the 5th earns interest from the next financial year. The balance at the close of the 5th is the balance that earns.

Can I close the account early?

Paragraph 13 allows premature closure after five years from the end of the year of opening, for treatment of a life-threatening disease, higher education, or a change of residency. The interest is one percentage point lower than the rate credited. Tick the box to project that lower rate.

What about a loan or a partial withdrawal?

A loan is available after one year from the end of the opening year and before five years, up to 25% of the balance at the end of the second year before the loan year. A withdrawal is available after five years, up to 50% of the lower of the balance at the end of the fourth preceding year and the balance at the end of the preceding year. This page projects deposits and interest.

Will 7.1% last for all 15 years?

The rate is reset each quarter. 7.1% is the rate for 1 October to 31 December 2026. Change the rate when a later quarter is notified. The maturity figure holds the rate in the form for every year of the projection.
