How to use it

  1. Type a number from 1 to 3999, or a numeral.
  2. Read the result.
  3. Standard forms only. IIII is not accepted as 4.

The symbols

The page uses I, V, X, L, C, D and M with the usual subtractive pairs: IV, IX, XL, XC, CD and CM. 1990 is MCMXC. A numeral is accepted only when it is the standard spelling of its value, so the same number always has one written form.

Numbers outside 1 to 3999, and symbols beyond those seven letters, are rejected. There is no overline for thousands beyond 3999.
