Vocal range test
Sing and the page shows the note you are on, how many cents sharp or flat it is, and the lowest and highest notes you hold steady. A voice type appears once the span is wide enough.

How to use it
- Press Start and allow the microphone. Headphones help if you tap the keys for a reference.
- Hold a comfortable low note, then a comfortable high note, each for about half a second.
- Read the span and the voice type. Reset clears the lowest and highest notes.
Notes, cents and voice types
Pitch is estimated with the YIN algorithm on short frames from the microphone. A note counts as held when the readings stay within about 40 cents for just under half a second. Cents measure the distance to the nearest semitone: 0 is in tune, and 100 cents is the next note. The keyboard lights the note you are on. Tap a key to hear a soft reference, and use headphones so that tone does not leak back into the microphone.
The voice types are the usual classical ranges: bass E2–E4, baritone A2–A4, tenor C3–C5, alto F3–F5, mezzo-soprano A3–A5 and soprano C4–C6, following McKinney, The Diagnosis and Correction of Vocal Faults (1994), with the bass range from Boldrey, Guide to Operatic Roles and Arias (1994). The page names the closest of those ranges once your held notes span at least 10 semitones. A second name appears when another type is almost as close. These are labels for practice, and a singing teacher listens to tone and passaggio as well as the extremes.

Questions
How do I find my lowest and highest notes?
Press Start, then hold the lowest note you can sing cleanly, and the highest. The page records a note after it stays steady for about half a second, so a quick scoop does not count.
What does the voice type mean?
It is the standard range closest to your lowest and highest held notes: bass, baritone, tenor, alto, mezzo-soprano or soprano. You need a span of at least 10 semitones before a type is named.
What are cents?
There are 100 cents in a semitone. A positive number means you are sharp of the note on screen, and a negative number means you are flat. Zero is right on the note.
Why does the note jump around?
Background noise, a breath, or two pitches at once make the estimate less sure. A quiet room, a single steady vowel and headphones for the reference tones give a cleaner reading.
Is the microphone recorded?
The samples are used to estimate pitch and then dropped. Stopping the test turns the microphone off.
