Online metronome
A steady click for practice: set the BPM or tap it in, choose the time signature and subdivisions, and accent the first beat.
Press Start or the space bar.
How to use the metronome
- Set the tempo with the slider or the ±1 and ±5 buttons, then press Start (or the space bar).
- Tap tempo: tap the button in time with a song four or more times and the metronome picks up its BPM.
- Choose the time signature so the accent lands on the first beat of each bar: 4/4 for most pop and rock, 3/4 for waltzes, 6/8 for many ballads and jigs.
- Subdivisions add quieter clicks between beats. Eighths and sixteenths help with strumming and fast passages; triplets help with swing and shuffle.
- The clicks are scheduled on the audio clock, not a page timer, so they stay steady even when the screen is busy.
Common tempos
- 40–60 BPM (Largo, Adagio): slow practice of a hard passage.
- 76–108 BPM (Andante, Moderato): most ballads and comfortable practice speeds.
- 110–130 BPM: typical pop, rock and dance; house music sits around 120–128.
- 140–180 BPM: fast rock, punk and drum and bass (often felt at half time).
Practising with a click
Start a new piece at a tempo where you can play it cleanly, then raise it by 4 to 5 BPM at a time. If you keep rushing, try putting the click on beats 2 and 4 only: set the tempo to half and count the clicks as the backbeat. On iPhone with iOS 17 or later the page asks for media playback, so the silent switch should not mute the click.
Questions
Is this online metronome accurate?
Yes. Each click is scheduled ahead on the Web Audio clock, which is sample-accurate, instead of a JavaScript timer that can drift.
How do I find the BPM of a song?
Press Tap tempo in time with the beat at least four times. The tempo is the average of your last taps.
Can I use it with headphones or a speaker?
Yes. The clicks play through whatever output your device is using. Bluetooth adds a little latency, so wired headphones feel tightest.
What time signature should I pick?
Count the beats in one bar of the music: most songs are 4/4, waltzes are 3/4, and 6/8 has two groups of three.
Does it work offline?
Once the page is open it needs no connection. For a metronome next to your tuner on iPhone, use the app.
