Game Center on iPhone: Sign In, Add Friends and Compare Scores
Game Center is Apple's built-in service for leaderboards, achievements and friends in iPhone and iPad games. Many casual games use it to let you compare high scores with players around the world, or just with friends. It's free, it's already on your phone, and setting it up properly takes a couple of minutes.
What Game Center gives you
- Leaderboards: rankings of high scores, globally and among your friends.
- Achievements: milestones a game awards as you play.
- Friends: a list of people whose scores and activity you can see in supported games.
- A profile: a nickname and avatar other players see, instead of your real name.
Each game decides which of these it supports.
Step 1: Sign in
Open Settings and find Game Center (the quickest way is to swipe down in Settings and search for "Game Center"). Turn it on and sign in with your Apple Account. Most people use the same account they use for the App Store.
Step 2: Choose your nickname and avatar
In Game Center settings, tap your profile to set a nickname. This is what appears on leaderboards. Pick something you're happy for strangers to see, and avoid using your full name if you'd rather stay private.
Step 3: Add friends
From your Game Center profile you can invite friends, usually by sending a link through Messages. Once they accept, their best scores appear alongside yours on friend leaderboards in games that support them. You can remove friends at any time from the same screen.
Step 4: Find leaderboards inside a game
Games show Game Center in different ways:
- A small Game Center access point (often your avatar in a corner of the menu screen). Tapping it opens your dashboard for that game, including leaderboards and achievements.
- A Leaderboard or Rankings button in the game's own menu.
- A banner that appears when you sign in or beat a score.
Leaderboards typically let you switch between All Players and Friends, and sometimes between Today, This Week and All Time. On newer versions of iOS, Apple's Games app also brings your games, friends' activity and leaderboards together in one place.
Privacy settings worth checking
In Settings › Game Center you can control:
- Who can see your profile (everyone, friends only, or only you).
- Whether friends can find you using your contact details.
- Nearby players, for local multiplayer.
- Friend requests from contacts, if you'd rather not get suggestions.
If you share a device with children, Screen Time's Content & Privacy Restrictions include Game Center controls such as multiplayer games and adding friends.
Fixing common problems
- "Game Center unavailable" or the access point doesn't appear: check you're signed in to Game Center in Settings and connected to the internet, then restart the game.
- Score not showing on the leaderboard: scores are submitted when the game ends and can take a short while to appear; some games only post your best score.
- Wrong account: sign out in Settings › Game Center and sign in again with the right Apple Account.
- Friends' scores missing: they need to accept your invitation, and their profile privacy may hide them.
Getting better at score-chasing games
Leaderboards make quick games more fun because there's always a score to beat. A few habits help:
- Warm up with one practice round before trying for a best score.
- Watch the pattern, not one piece. In fast matching games, scanning the whole board beats fixating on one area.
- Stop while you're ahead. Short sessions keep your reactions sharp; scores usually drop when you're tired.
- Compare with friends, not just the world. Global leaderboards are dominated by a few players; friend rankings are where the real rivalry is.
Try it with a quick puzzle game
A fast colour-matching game with leaderboards: Speck Match (free, by the author of this guide) is a puzzle game where you tap and drag to connect dots of the same colour. Faster matches score higher, the board speeds up as you play, and you can compete on Game Center leaderboards with players worldwide.
