How the cut-out works
U2-Net finds the main subject and keeps soft edges such as hair. It works best with one person or one product. A crowd, or a scene with no single subject, can keep the brightest region. Openings such as a handle or an arch can keep a little of the background. Fine hair stays soft.
The first run downloads the cut-out model, about 4.4 MB, and this browser keeps it. It also prepares the on-device runtime, about 3.6 MB on the processor or about 6.8 MB when a graphics chip is available. A PNG keeps the transparent edges. White, black, a colour or a blur can also be saved as a JPG. Changing the background reuses the cut-out.

Questions
Does my photo leave this device?
Your photo stays in this browser. The cut-out runs here, and the file is saved to your downloads.
Why does the first cut-out take a moment?
The first run downloads the model, about 4.4 MB, and prepares the on-device runtime. This browser keeps both, so the next photo starts straight away.
Which photos come out cleanly?
One person or one product on a plain setting comes out cleanly. A crowd can keep the brightest region, and a hole in the subject can keep a little background.
Can I change the background after the cut-out?
Yes. Transparent, white, black, a colour and a blur all reuse the same cut-out. Move the blur slider to change the softness.
Should I save a PNG or a JPG?
Save a PNG when you want the transparent edges. A JPG uses a solid background. Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari can run the cut-out, and a computer is quicker than a phone.
