The index behind the result

The series is CUUR0000SA0 from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, base 1982-84=100. The equivalent amount is your dollars times the later index divided by the earlier index. One hundred dollars at the 2000 annual average (172.2) is $182.17 at the 2024 annual average (313.689), a change of 82.17% and 2.53% a year over those 24 years.

Monthly figures run from January 1913 through September 2026, when the index is 336.940. October 2025 has no figure: the Bureau marks it unavailable because of the 2025 lapse in appropriations. From September 2025 (324.800) to September 2026 (336.940) the index rises 3.74%. The Bureau's news release states that twelve-month change as 3.7%, which is this ratio rounded to one decimal. The 2026 annual average is published after the year closes.
