Total return and the annualised rate
The gain is the final value minus the amount invested. The return is that gain divided by the amount invested. A final value of 1,500 on 1,000 invested is a gain of 500 and a return of 50%.
The annualised return is (final ÷ invested) raised to the power of 1 ÷ years, then minus 1. Over three years that 50% total return is 14.47% a year. It matches the CAGR of the same two amounts. Leave the years empty when you only want the total return.

Questions
What does annualised mean here?
It is the constant yearly rate that turns the amount invested into the final value over the years you enter.
Can the final value be lower than the amount invested?
Yes. The gain and the return are then negative.
Should I include fees?
Enter the amount that actually left your account, and a final value after the fees you want in the result.
Is a single year's return the annualised rate?
Over one year the total return and the annualised return are the same number.
