How to use it

  1. Choose gold (87.48 grams) or silver (612.36 grams).
  2. Enter the price per gram, then your savings, gold, silver, other wealth and debts.
  3. Read the nisab and the zakat at 2.5%.

Nisab, then 2.5%

The gold nisab on this page is 87.48 grams and the silver nisab is 612.36 grams, the weights the National Zakat Foundation publishes. The nisab value is that weight times the price per gram you enter. Net wealth is cash and savings, plus gold at its price per gram, plus silver at its price per gram, plus other wealth such as shares and trade goods, minus debts.

Once net wealth reaches the nisab, zakat is 2.5% of the whole net wealth. It is due after that wealth has been held for one lunar year. A second opinion uses 85 grams of gold and 595 grams of silver. The price is the one you type, in the same currency as the cash and the other amounts.

Questions

Which standard should I pick?

The page offers both. The National Zakat Foundation describes the silver nisab as the more cautious measure for a mix of assets, and the gold nisab when gold is the asset you are measuring. A scholar in your tradition can confirm the choice.

What are the weights?

87.48 grams of gold and 612.36 grams of silver. A second published opinion uses 85 grams and 595 grams.

Is zakat 2.5% of the amount above the nisab?

On this page it is 2.5% of the whole net wealth once the nisab is met.

When is it due?

After the wealth has been in your possession for one lunar year, and still meets the nisab.

How do I enter shares?

Put their current value in other wealth, in the same currency as the cash. Gold and silver jewellery you are counting goes in by the gram, with the price per gram.
