How to use it

  1. Enter your age, retirement age, the age to plan until, and today's monthly expenses.
  2. Enter inflation, the return while you save, the return in retirement, and the savings you already have.
  3. Read the corpus and the monthly saving.

From today's expenses to a corpus

Yearly spending today is the monthly figure times 12. By retirement it has grown with the inflation rate you enter, and so has a pension you enter in today's money. The corpus is the sum that can pay that first retirement year's spending at the start of every retirement year, with the payment rising each year at your inflation rate, while the balance earns the retirement return. When the retirement return equals inflation, the corpus is the first year's spending times the number of retirement years.

Savings you already have grow at the saving return until retirement. The gap is the corpus minus that future savings. The monthly saving is the deposit at the end of each month that grows, at the same saving return, to equal the gap. A pension that covers the inflated spending brings the corpus to zero. The inflation page has the US CPI-U series when you want a past US price change to compare with the inflation rate you type here.

Questions

What does the corpus assume about withdrawals?

The year's spending is taken at the start of each retirement year, then the remaining balance earns the retirement return. Next year's spending is higher by your inflation rate.

When is the monthly deposit added?

At the end of each month, and it earns the saving return from then until retirement.

How should I enter a pension?

Enter it in today's money, per month. The page grows it with the same inflation rate as the expenses and subtracts it from the spending the savings have to fund.

Where do I find a US inflation figure?

The inflation calculator uses the official CPI-U series through September 2026. The rate you type on this page is the one the plan uses, in whatever currency your expenses are in.
