How to use it

  1. Enter the shares and the price of the first purchase.
  2. Add further purchases, up to six.
  3. Read the average price, the total shares and the total cost.

What the average includes

Each lot contributes its shares times its price to the total cost. The average price is that total divided by the total shares. Ten shares at 100 and ten shares at 80 cost 1,800 for 20 shares, so the average is 90.

Six purchases fit on the page. Further lots can be combined into one line by their total shares and their total cost. A broker statement that matches a sale to one particular lot can show a different gain on that sale. This page is the cost of the whole holding.

Questions

Can a lot have a fractional share?

Yes. Enter 1.5 or any share count above zero.

What if one lot was free?

Enter a price of zero. Those shares still count in the total, and they pull the average down.

How do I add a seventh purchase?

Add its shares together with another lot and put their combined cost on that line, or fold several lots into one row the same way.

Does this pick which shares I sold?

The result is the average cost of the shares you list. A report that identifies a specific lot can show a different gain on one sale.
