Caption and hashtag counter
Paste a caption to count characters, words, hashtags and mentions against each platform's limits, spot duplicate tags and preview what shows before “more”.
Paste or type your caption.
Shown before “more” (about 125 characters):
Character limits by platform
- Instagram: captions up to 2,200 characters and 20 @mentions. Since December 2025 Instagram allows 5 hashtags per post or reel (it used to be 30). Bios are 150 characters. Only the first lines show before “more”.
- TikTok: captions up to 4,000 characters, hashtags included.
- X: 280 for standard accounts. Links count as 23 and emoji and most CJK characters count double; the counter applies those rules approximately.
- YouTube: titles 100 characters, descriptions 5,000. Over 60 hashtags and YouTube ignores all of them.
- LinkedIn posts 3,000, Threads 500, Pinterest descriptions 500.
How this counter works
Characters are counted the way people see them: an emoji with a skin tone or a flag counts once, not as several code units. Hashtags and mentions are detected as you type, duplicates are flagged, and the preview shows how much of the caption appears before the feed cuts it off. Your caption never leaves the browser.
Hashtag tips
- Pick a few specific hashtags that describe the post. On Instagram the cap is now five, so choose the five most relevant.
- Put the hook in the first sentence; that is what people read before tapping more.
- Avoid repeating the same block of hashtags on every post, and remove tags that are not about the content.
Questions
What is the Instagram caption character limit?
2,200 characters, including spaces, emoji and hashtags. Only about the first 125 characters show in the feed before more.
How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?
Up to 5 per post or reel. Instagram lowered the limit from 30 in December 2025; with more, the caption or comment may not post.
How are emoji counted?
Here, each emoji you see counts as one character. X counts emoji as two, which the X mode applies.
Does it count spaces and line breaks?
Yes. Platforms count spaces and line breaks toward the limit, so this counter does too.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Counting happens in your browser.
